What is a columbarium?

ST. PETER’S COLUMBARIUM

Sacred and Secure

The final resting place of a loved one’s remains is very important. St. Peter’s Cemetery has served the people of the Plattsburgh area for nearly a century. This well established and significantly endowed cemetery has a very secure and solid future. It will be here for generations to come.

Cremations are becoming more common and are now sanctioned by the Catholic Church. An appropriate and dignified resting place for cremains speaks of our love for the deceased. St. Peter’s Cemetery has created a stately columbarium near the front entrance of the cemetery. This black and gray granite columbarium is an above ground vault designed to hold the ashes or cremains of the deceased. At the center of the columbarium is a powerful bronze statue entitled Triumph by Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz. This artistic creation speaks of Christ’s victory over death and the act of faith by which we place our lives into the Father’s hands.

Each of the 216 niches is 12" deep, 12" wide, and 12" high and is large enough to hold two cremation urns. The setting for the columbarium is peaceful and reflective and easily accessed all twelve months of the year. Please call the rectory or your funeral home of choice or stop at the cemetery for more information.

Columbarium Prices:

Each niche, large enough to hold two cremation urns, costs $1,200
Engraving and opening costs are $250

Columbarium Specifics

  1. Absolutely nothing may be attached to or placed on any niche at any time during the year. The dignified appearance of the columbaria can be easily cluttered by flower vases, vigil lights, flags, greeting cards, pictures and statues. The area will be landscaped and families may wish to make donations to the flower beds.

  2. All lettering/engraving on the niche openings will be uniform and will be coordinated by St. Peter’s Cemetery. The lettering will include name, date of birth, date of death and veteran status.

  3. Veterans plaques will not be attached to the columbarium. A separate memorial area around the American flag pole will be the location for the niche size 8" x 5" bronze plaques.

  4. Payment in full is required prior to entombment of cremains.
